The ASEAN Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) for Medical Practitioners, signed by our Minister of International Trade and Industry in August 2008, together with counterpart Ministers from other ASEAN countries as part of the continuing liberalization process in our region, will be implemented on 1st January 2010. The MRA’s objectives are to “facilitate mobility of medical practitioners within ASEAN, exchange information and enhance cooperation in respect of mutual recognition of medical practitioners, promote adoption of best practices on standards and qualifications, and provide opportunities for capacity building and training of medical practitioners.”

But what does this really mean for us as medical practitioners in Malaysia? What can we expect to happen after 1st January 2010? How will medical practice in this country and this region change?

To answer these questions, we are organizing a forum on “AFTA and the ASEAN MRA: Implications for medical practitioners” where speakers from the Ministry of Health Malaysia, Malaysian Medical Council and Association of Private Hospitals Malaysia, who have all been involved in the negotiations and drawing up the practical details of implementation, will inform us about the various provisions and Malaysia’s obligations with respect to medical practitioners under the relevant agreements. During the second half of the forum, representatives of doctors’ associations will present the concerns of doctors in this country.

This forum is open to all doctors in Malaysia. Non-members of AMM and MMA will be charged a registration fee of RM50 per person. Prior registration is encouraged to ensure a place at this important forum.
