Announcement

The College of Surgeons Basic Surgical Sciences Examination will be held from 16th to 17th October 2008.

This announcement is specifically targeted at young doctors thinking of a career in surgery. Despite an increasing number of spaces available for training in surgery in master programme in Malaysia, there are still three times as many applicants for the positions available.

This examination is designed to help to match candidate to a suitable programme. It tests candidate on surgical relevant basic sciences and surgical skills. The examination consists of 2 MCQ papers and 3 vivas. In addition, there will be a surgical skill OSCE as well.

The examiners shall be drawn from the universities and the College of Surgeons. All of them will have had extensive experience in examining the Part 1 examination of the universities Master programme.

Although the examination is being run by the College, it has drawn advice from the Conjoint Boards of Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery and Otorhinolaryngology.

Eligibility For This Examinations

To be eligible for this examination, all candidates must:

• possess a primary medical qualification
• be registered with the Malaysian Medical Council or Medical Council of their respective countries

Format Of The Basic Surgical Sciences Examination

The examination consists of two parts:

Section 1
Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ)
(a) MCQ 1 consists of 60 questions
(b) MCQ 2 consists of 60 questions

Section 2
OSCE – Basic Surgical Skills
Viva voce
(a) Part 1 - Anatomy and applied surgical anatomy
(b) Part 2 - Physiology and applied clinical physiology
(c) Part 3 - Pathology, Microbiology, Basic Principles of Surgery

Candidates are required to pass the Section 1 Examination before proceeding to Section 2 Examination.
